Implementing the United for Prevention project shed light on the complexities of coalition-led advocacy. Firstly, there are unique strengths and challenges attached to working in diverse multi-stakeholder coalitions. Secondly, the policy landscape and public sector processes are often hindered by bureaucracy, delays, and unpredictability.

Using advocacy to try and hold governments to account in these contexts is not straightforward. The observations in this brief are intended as food for thought for programme designers, funders and civil society actors who are planning or involved in advocacy and coalition-building in any sector. We hope to contribute to honest reflection and dialogue in the broader development community on how to set realistic goals for our interventions.
