The Chair of Frontline AIDS, Prof. Nana Poku, announced today that the Board of Directors has unanimously appointed John Plastow as the organisation’s permanent Executive Director.

John Plastow initially joined Frontline AIDS in April 2024 as Interim Executive Director. In this period his clear and decisive leadership led the Board to offer him the role on a permanent basis.

“We have worked closely with John over the past six months and have been hugely impressed with his leadership and his focus on strengthening the Frontline AIDS Partnership,” said Prof. Nana Poku. “The next six years, leading up to 2030 the target year set by UN Member States to end AIDS will be critical for Frontline AIDS. It’s a period of strategic renewal for the organisation and we are confident that John can provide the visionary leadership which the organisation needs.”

John brings with him a wealth of experience as a civil society leader, having previously served as Oxfam International’s Interim Global Programmes Director. Prior to that, he was Chief of Impact at Oxfam Great Britain and CARE International UK’s Programme and Policy Director for over eight years.

As Interim Executive Director, John has prioritised harnessing the collective strengths of the Frontline AIDS global partnership. He has engaged extensively with partner organisations, visiting Frontline AIDS’ staff and partners in South Africa and partners in Kenya to see their work firsthand and explore how Frontline AIDS can better support their efforts Recently, John hosted a critical threeday meeting of the Partnership Council in Brighton, which helped re-engergise the partnership and set a clear direction for the future.

“It has been an immense privilege to witness first-hand how Frontline AIDS works with an inspirational network of civil society organisations who are thought and practice leaders in their own contexts,” said John. In the coming years it is my ambition to use Frontline AIDS’ convening power to provide partners with a platform to act collectively, driving even greater positive change in the global effort to end AIDS.
