The number of people living with HIV in Mexico is relatively small. However, infection rates are rising, particularly among marginalised communities. What’s more, discrimination and violence against these groups is hampering efforts to respond to the epidemic.

Colectivo Sol

Our work helps Colectivo Sol reach other community-based organisations that are working to change attitudes towards the people most at risk from HIV.

Established in 1981 to defend the rights of gay and transgender communities in Mexico, Colectivo Sol today helps other community organisations strengthen their own programmes to reduce stigma, discrimination, human rights violations and gender-based violence.

The team has an outstanding advocacy record supporting the country’s marginalised communities, including influencing the Mexican government to formulate a stronger HIV response. They have also been members of the National Council on HIV/AIDS, the highest decision-making body on HIV-related matters in Mexico.

OUR IMPACT IN MEXICO

In 2018, Colectivo Sol reached:

• 4,700 people with HIV prevention services.
• Six community-based organisations with technical support.
